Values Clarification

My original values of compassion, knowledge, selflessness and self-awareness are all very important values that I believe a nurse should exemplify. Being in nursing, I know that everyone should practice compassion regardless of what unit they are on. Compassion is an important value as you need to feel a sense of love for what your job. It is vital to becoming connected to families, individuals and their situations as this can give them confidence, and helps increase their chances for optimal health outcomes and/or overall level of comfort. I believe individuals are more drawn to nurses who demonstrate this quality.

ITo be knowledgeable is to be involved and updated with best practice guidelines. People gain knowledge through experience and continuous education. Knowledge builds on expertise, which can make nurses feel more confident in their ability to engage in their nursing practice. Having knowledge about the diseases the patients have, their medical history, medications and lab values and being able to connect all this information is key to any type of nursing. From this placement, and the knowledge I have developed, I am confident to be entering into pre-consolidation for nursing school. Nurses who are selfless and willing to put their patients first before their own needs are essential in health care. People put trust into health care professionals to give them exceptional care. There were multiple times I would miss break to do post-operative vitals for someone as it is important to assess their condition. If someone was going on break, it was essential that they got someone to do their vitals for them.
