Selflessness

I consider myself to have a strong sense of selflessness. Selflessness is putting others’ needs before your own. This value means a lot to me, especially going into nursing because patients’ needs are definitely more important than your own in this profession. Your patients are in the hospital because they have no other options to deal with what they are going through. They trust the level of expertise in the health care to give them the necessary help they require. If you have to stay past your shift for an extra hour to help read to the kids than you are obligated to. An experience in my life where I demonstrated a great amount of selflessness to others was at camp for the summer. I was looking after a group of 13-15 years old, who I had to always put their needs over my own. It was important because it made them feel comfortable to be away from home for three weeks. Also, it boosted their moods and attitudes each and every day. Knowing I had helped them gave me a sense of being a selfless person. Another experience where I had to demonstrate selflessness was in second year. I was always leaving later in for my breaks as I had other obligations as a student to do beforehand.
