My personal values exemplify what I expect to demonstrate as a nursing student and as a future nurse.
These values are important and are the framework of how nursing practice should be. Experiencing
my very first placement in a long-term care home, I've had the chance to build on my personal values
and gain a deeper understanding of how they would tie into nursing practice.
Being aware of your emotions and thoughts, and understanding how negative thoughts would effect
someone else is important in nursing. For example, while doing a resident's morning care, changing
their brief and doing perineal care can be tough, so, its important to watch what you say about the
smell, so the resident doesn't get offended. This value is important because people percieve things
differently, so as an individual you need to think about what you're going to say so others aren't confused
by the meaning.
Having compassion is a key personal value of mine. In nursing home, nurses and PSW's
are surrounded by the elderly population who are suffering from many different
diagnosis, some more complex than others. You can only imagine the amount
of pain they go through on a daily basis. I have shown a very sympathetic
attitude while being at this nursing home during the semester of 2015.
I show a genuine compassion and concern for the individuals who
live there and I want to do as much as I can to be able to help
them. I've noticed many residents get upset about being in a
nursing home, so, I've had to sit down with many and
reassure them that this is a safe and enjoyable place for
them. Also, that their families can visit at any time, so
they don't need to feel isolated.
Demonstrating selflessness is key to success in the
nursing program. Nursing is all about helping others
from newborns to old age. There were many times
during this semester that having to stay late with a
resident to finish feeding them and missing my break
time was necessary or even missing my break to help
with a bath. Being in nursing, we need to make those
kind of commitments as well as take losses like our
breaks.
Knowledge definitely is important when working in a
nursing home. The elderly population is more complex
than any other population for several reasons. Old age is
considered to be at the end of the life cycle, or close to the
end. It's important to monitor your patients closely because
they are vulnerable to anything. Having knowledge about signs
and symptoms of different diagnosis will help keep the resident
in the best possible health.
